P. Moynihan’s career day, high handicap fuel victories at FLX preseason tournament

GREECE, N.Y. (FLX) — Sixteen chipper snappers endured the early spring Rochester weather for a preseason tune up event among FLX Tour pros last weekend at Lakeshore Country Club, but one of the youngsters shined brighter than the rest in a field full of stars.

Patrick Moynihan, a reigning Genesee Invitational champion, won the invidual contest with a net score -8 (63), adjusted for his 33.2 handicap. It was his first time out for the year and one of the best rounds of the young man’s life.

The low round for the youngest Moyhnihan in turn fueled victory for his foursome in the group best ball play, with a net score of -16 (55) narrowly defeating the second place team of Chris Miers, Chuck Pace, Gene Ferrera, and Matt Driffill who finished with a -15 (56).

“What a great day we had,” FLX Tour Co-Commissioner Shane Driffill said. “Lot of Tour veterans showing up, talking shop, and getting ready for the Commissioner’s Cup next week — even had a few newcomers. We all had a Very Nice Time (VNT).”

“Great to see folks like Pmoyns showing up and showing out for his first round of the year,” FLX Tour Co-Commissioner Matt Driffill said. “All in all, the vibes were extremely high and far less cut throat than our usual events.”

Though pride and honor were on the line, and fun was had by all in attendance, no Young Man of the Year points were up for grabs in this preseason tournament, and FLX Tour Pros will have to wait until June 1 for that opportunity with the first major of the season: The 2024 Grand Open.

Speaking of which, FLX officials issued a final reminder Wednesday for prospective participants for this year’s Grand Open to fill out the registration form. Failing to fill out the form might disqualify a prospective golfer from entering into the field of competition.

With the preseason in the rear-view mirror, focus now shifts for the first-ever Commissioner’s Cup on May 11 at Genesee Valley Golf Course. Co-Commissioners Matt & Shane Driffill drafted teams and will select pairings for the two-man best ball contest next Friday, May 10.
