FLX Tour drops Sunday competition from inaugural Commissioner’s Cup

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (FLX) — Mother’s Day handed the FLX Tour its first major scandal of 2024.

A week after the highly-anticipated announcement of the first-ever Commissioner’s Cup, Tour officials have changed their plans.

Officials say, due to Mother’s Day on May 12, 2024, the Tour will no longer make the Commissioner’s Cup a two-day event, but instead a single day of competition on May 11.

“Yeah, that’s our bad,” said FLX Tour Co-Commissioner Matt Driffill. “Talk about oversight. Are we bad sons?”

Sources confirmed Monday that because of canceling play on Sunday for the event, the Saturday teams will be expanded to 10 vs 10 in a two-man best ball match play format, with the teams drafted by FLX Tour Co-Commissioners Matt and Shane Driffill.

“It’s unfortunate we have to swereve this time and adjust, but mothers love ball markers, so if anyone wants a gift for Mother’s Day, just let me know,” said FLX Tour Rules Czar and Head of Content Joey Mortillaro.

For those who have filled out the participation form, your answers for Saturday availability and entry into the draft are all set. If you haven’t yet filled out the form, you can do so here.

Plans remain for the event to be held at the world famous Genesee Valley Golf Course, despite the grumblings of several Tour pros who expressed desires to broaden the venue horizons on tour.

“Look, there’s a new county golf superintendent this year and we gotta build up a little good will with them since we’re playing tournaments at their courses all year round,” said FLX Tour Co-Commissioner Shane Driffill. “We’ll save up and move it from a muni to a nicer course next year.”

Embarassing as it is for Tour leadership to show their ass and have to cancel a day of an event, sources close to headquarters say spirits remain high and the mood is an optimistic one, as murmurs of the largest Tour field ever for the 2024 Grand Open are beginning to surface.

In the meantime, leadership says they are still on track to live stream the Commissioner’s Cup draft about two weeks before the event so teams can work on strategy with their captains before teeing off. The draft will be hosted on the FLX Tour Instagram page.

Leadership also wanted to send a reminder to new prospective Tour pros that they need at least 10 rounds logged on the 18 Birdies app to be eligible to compete in FLX Tour events. Get those numbers up, those are rookie numbers.
