The FLX Tour is unique in its usage of select terms to describe golf and the atmosphere surrounding the game. On this page you’ll find the definitions for these phrases and how they apply on Tour.

Bell Ringer — A term used to describe a player or team in a tournament that has no chance of winning and is mostly just donating their entry fee to the cause. Its origins are rooted in phrases like tax write off, UNICEF Pro, and the like, but mostly evolved from the Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle Campaign.

Big Check — Aside from the major tournament trophies, the Big Check is the biggest prize on Tour and represents cash winnings for winners at major tournaments.

Breakfast Ball — An optional provisional mulligan for purchase, available only at the tee box on holes 1 and 10. These traditionally cost $5 and help fund tournaments’ closest-to-the-pin prizes.

Champions Luncheon — An important FLX Tour tradition where Tour Pros gather after major tournaments to drink, eat, and discuss their triumphs and shortcomings. Some accusations of cheating are often lobbied here as well.

Churchville Classic — The FLX Tour’s two-man scramble tournament is the second major championship on the calendar, traditionally held in July at Churchville Golf Course.

Daily Shame Update (DSU) — A screenshot of the payment spread sheet sent each day leading up to a tournament that publicly shames Tour members who are slow to pay their entry fees.\

DIG — A versatile term, most commonly used to yell at a ball on the putting green that needs more speed; like the opposite of SIT. Also can be used in terms of digging deep to overcome whatever obstacle a Tour pro may be facing.

DSI — Refers to the Department of Statistical Intregriy. Formed in 2025, DSI plays a vital role in ensuring equitable competition by verifying and maintaining accurate handicaps for each player.

Dud — A term often used to describe a bogie. Can also be used in a situation like “doubel dud” or “triple dud.”

FLX Cup — Formerly known as the “Lakeshore Cup,” The FLX Cup was rebranded in 2023 as the fourth and final major on the Tour’s annual calendar. It’s a singles style tournament and is the one major every year that is held at a non-munincipal golf course.

FLX Tour — Short for Finger Lakes Tour, and often referred to as the “Flex Tour.” The FLX Tour represents the best and brightest in professional golf in the Finger Lakes and throughout Upstate New York.

Fun Meter — An often used phrased to remind players why they are playing golf in the first place. Bad shot? Fun meter pal. Bad round? Better check your levels. FLX Tour Director of Vibes Brandon Moynihan is tapped to oversee fun meters on Tour.

Genesee Invitational — The FLX Tour’s two-man best ball tournament and traditionally the third major championship on the tour calendar. The event is held in August at the Genesee Valley Golf Course.

Grand Open — The most prestigious major tournament on the FLX Tour and was the event that started it all back in 2022. The Grand Open is a singles competition and is traditionally the first major of the season, held in June at Durand Eastman Golf Course.

Grow the Game — A term used to advocate for new Tour Pros to be invited to tournaments. Sometimes the Tour can seem gatekeepy and this simple phrase reminds others of our humble roots and the real goal of securing a Saudi sponsorship.

Head Scratcher — You know what we’re talkin’ about here. You hit a piss missile down the fairway about 220. Track that shit on 18 birdies because it’s the best shot of your round. You roll up confidently for your approach and BAM! Fuckin duff the shit out that bih. That’s the kind of shot that makes you go “hm” aka … the head scratcher.

Hot Dogging — Showing off. Sometimes in the form of an unnecessary shot like a greenside flop when you don’t need to or an approach stinger from a wide open fairway, but more often used in the version of a lifestyle flex, like playing a really nice private course mid-day on a Tuesday. A fluid term, but it’s like porn; you know it when you see it.

Juicing — When a player has a bad round, they justify their poor performance with a positive spin of “juicing” their handicap. Bad rounds = higher handicaps, which is advantageous in tournament play. Many Tour pros are often posting their worst scores ahead of majors in an effort to juice those handis.

Light Fluff — A term used to describe how Tour Pros can lightly alter the ball lies before their shot. The Tour Charter states that light fluff meains a player may only use their club to fluff their ball and not to move it laterally or forward.

Lot of Meat — Used to mean that a putt left short is not a gimme. Major tournament rules state there are no gimmes allowed in play and that every hole must be finished. Often used with “Lot of meat left on that bone,” or “I’ve seen less meat in the backseat of Dirt’s ’91 Caprice.”

Minguini — Often used as play on the Italiano word Minghia, mostly as an expression in instances of extreme accomplishment, enthusiasm and wonder, or anguish, misery and defeat.

VNT — Very Nice Time. Pretty self explanatory. The backbone of what the FLX Tour is all about.

Young Man — Perhaps the most important turn of phrase used on tour. Young man describes Tour Pros who play the game with compassion, integrity, and enthusiasm.

Young Man of the Year — Debuting in 2023, the Young Man of the Year is the FLX Tour’s version of the Player of the Year award. Points are calculated based on a combination of net results at major touraments.
