Teams, tee times set for 5th Annual Churchville Classic

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (FLX) — The FLX Tour heads west on Saturday, May 30 for the 5th annual Churchville Classic at Churchville Golf Course.

The first tee time is scheduled for 7:30 a.m., with groups heading out every 10 minutes through 9:10 a.m. for this year’s two-man scramble showdown featuring 44 golfers and 22 randomly drawn teams.

As always, the scramble format should be familiar to most players. Any rules questions can be directed to Tour Rules Czar Joey Mortillaro. Unless they’re stupid questions — in that case, please contact Nathan Wirth immediately.

Teams were officially drawn live on May 20, with all 44 names tossed into the hat for a completely random selection process. The 35/15 rule will be in effect for team handicap calculations, and tournament officials say official team handicap numbers will be released soon.

Entry fee for the event is $25, though tournament accountants report that a “concerning number” of players still haven’t paid up.

The oddsmakers already have several pairings circled heading into championship week.

Among the early favorites:

  • Chris Miers and Zachary Stedman
  • Joey Mortillaro and Chuck Pace
  • Shane Driffill and Brandon Moynihan
  • Dominic Trento and Mike Mortillaro

And then there’s the biggest storyline of the weekend.

Two-time defending champion Chad Christ returns looking to make FLX Tour history as the first player ever to win three consecutive majors. Christ teams up with Jarred Schrader in what could become one of the most dangerous pairings in the field if they get hot early.

Following the tournament, players are expected to gather at Jeremiah’s Tavern on Monroe Avenue for the traditional champions luncheon and post-round storytelling session, where scorecards may or may not improve retroactively over several beverages.
