Team Shane prevails in 3rd annual Commissioner’s Cup

PENFIELD, N.Y. (FLX) — It was a frosty start and a hot finish Sunday at Shadow Lake as the FLX Tour teed off for the 3rd annual Commissioner’s Cup.

After knocking on the door for the past two years, Team Shane finally broke through and claimed victory.

“First I win the 2025 Young Man of the Year, and now this? I am going to be insufferable,” FLX Tour Co-Commissioner Shane Driffill said.

The event brought out the best, brightest, and most available FLX Tour pros, with 12-on-12 teams competing in two-man shamble matches. From the opening tee shot, Team Shane set the tone — and never really let go.

In the first match, Shane Driffill and Joey Mortilaro secured a convincing 3&3 win to get things rolling. Team Matt’s Uncle Chris Miers and Brandon Moynihan followed with a dominant 6&5 victory over Scott and Zach Stedman, evening the leaderboard after two.

Match three delivered some late drama, as Matt and Danny Driffill were 2 up with two to play, but Ben Annal and Lou Englert battled back to halve the match. In the fourth group, Team Shane’s Sean Sawyer and Patrick Moynihan held on to beat Mkyola Prokopenkp and Chuck Pace by 1, and in the fifth group, Chad Christ and Mike Mortilaro held on for a one-point win over Michael DiMuro and Ryan Netchke. In the alternate match, Kyle Pierce and Dan Reisenburger added another point with a win over Brier Koroly and Dan Driffill Sr.

“We basically got our asses kicked,” FLX Tour Co-Commissioner Matt Driffill said. “The last two years we really focused on experience with the captain’s picks, but that experience turned into aging and injuries. I had guys complaining about backs, hips, knees, wrists, ankles. It was like an FLX Senior Tour team really.”

All told, it was a complete team effort—and a long-awaited breakthrough — for Team Shane on a crisp but beautiful day at Shadow Lake. Highlights of the day inlcuded Sweet Lou’s eagle from 80 yards on out hole 5, and P Moyns chip in for birdie on 18, which all but sealed the fate of the match.

But no time to dwell. The Tour rolls on.

Up next: the Churchville Classic, the beloved two-man scramble, returns Saturday, May 30. Registration opens this week. Get ready.
