ROCHESTER, N.Y. (FLX) — It’s Commissioner’s Cup week folks!
History will be made this Saturday at the world famous Genesee Valley Golf Course when Team Shane takes on Team Matt in this first-ever FLX Tour event.
Teams were selected late last month in a live-streamed draft on the FLX Tour’s Instagram. Similarly, the pairings and match selections will also be live-streamed on IG. That is scheduled to take place Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. Tour pros and fans are invited to join in on the festivities.
“It’s for fun,” said FLX Tour Head of Content and Rules Czar Joey Mortillaro.
Speaking of rules, Mortillaro reminds participants that this Ryder-Cup style format is two-man team best ball match play. Unfamiliar with that kind of game? Look it up youngster, this is 101 stuff and if you’re in the Commissioner’s Cup, you should be ahead of that curriculum.
Still want to learn more about this format? The PGA of America explains it here. Also handicaps will be 90% applied for this event, as is the USGA standard reccomedation for such tournaments.
ALL PARTICIPANTS OF THE 2024 COMMISSIONER’S CUP MUST DOWNLOAD THE GOLF GAME BOOK APP AND CREATE A PROFILE ON THAT APP FOR THIS EVENT. IT TAKES THREE MINUTES. JUST DO IT. IT’S FOR FUN.
“We get that everyone is hesitant to download another app, and frankly we feel the same, but 18 Birdies (the official scoring app of the FLX Tour) doesn’t have the software functionality for the type of scoring we needed for this,” FLX Tour Co-Commissioner Shane Driffill said. “It doesn’t take long, and if you have it, you’ll be one step up on the competition for the 2025 Commissioner’s Cup.”
“I guess if everyone is downloading Golf Game Book app, might be a good time to plug the FLX Tour Discord server,” said FLX Tour Co-Commissioner Matt Driffill, who’s been trying to get the Tour’s Discord off the ground for months. “With everyone on iMessage, green chats, Group Me, Instagram — it’s all so splintered. Discord is finally a place where we can get all Tour pros in one place for real time digital communication.”
With only four people so far on Tour having joined the Discord, it appears to be an uphill battle for the captain of Team Matt.
Though that may be the case, communication has been anything but slow lately.
Whispers of activity from each team regarding alternate usage, color schemes, and more have been regular, but tight-lipped. Each team appears intent on keeping their intentions secret leading up to tee time on Saturday.
Sources close to the situation said Monday that Joey Mortillaro, who is representing for Team Shane at the Cup, inquired for information about Team Matt on Monday morning, specifically about team colors and bench rotations. Those same sources say the elder Co-Commissioner quickly shot down the inquiry with nobility and grace, replying:
“Apologies for lacking transparency, but these are internal team mattters and I intend to keep them that way.”
Chills.
Whether it’s Discord, carrier pigeon, or PornHub comments section, the news will be traveling fast this weekend after the Cup is hoisted. Drama will unfold and history will be made, and it all starts Thursday at 7 p.m. with the live match selection draft. TUNE IN!
