Date announced for 2023 Genesee Invitational, largest field in FLX Tour history expected

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (FLX) — Gentlemen … start your engines!

FLX Tour officials announced Wednesday the date has been locked in for the 2023 Genesee Invitational, the Tour’s third major of the season.

The tournament will take place on Sunday, August 27 at the world famous Genesee Valley Golf Course. The first group is scheduled to tee off at 9:10 a.m.

It’s expected to be the biggest field for the FLX Tour to date, with seven tee times booked for a potential 28-man field.

The tournament, as is tradition, will utilize a two-man best ball format. Teams, pairings, and tee teams will be drawn live once the field is finalized at a to-be-determined date.

A two-man best ball format will call for each player on each team to play every shot as if the whole round is single’s format, but the team will take the best score on each hole from each player.

In last year’s Genesee Invitational, there was a tie for the championship with Matt Driffill, Shane Driffill, Joey Mortillaro and Josh Valletta all etching their names in history.

Valletta arrived late to the course that day, sparking one of the more memorable starts to a tournment in FLX history.

After several missed calls to Valletta and multiple attempts to reach him, the first group teed off with Mortillaro believing he would be competing without his teammate. Until Matt Driffill saw his phone ring with Valletta’s name. This is how it went down:

Josh: Hey

Matt: Dude where the fuck are you?

Josh: You guys golfin’?

Matt: Uhh yeah dude, we just started. You’re supposed to have teed off.

Josh: [Long pause] … You guys playin’ 18?

Matt: Uh yearh.

Josh: Alright, I’m coming.

Absolute classic.

Valletta arrived and a course marshall then dropped him off with his group on hole No. 3.

Late-round heroics from Mortillaro helped tie the tourney. This year, however, will be different, with no ties and only a single champion. Also new this year, handicaps will be utilized.

It’s been a quiet few weeks since the Churchville Classic, but with this announcement today, the FLX Tour is back in full swing. Stay tuned for updates and announcements as the Invitational draws near.
