Teams announced for 2023 Churchville Classic

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (FLX) — Anuses were clenched Thursday evening as FLX Tour officials hosted a Zoom meeting to draw pairings for this year’s Churchville Classic.

The two-man scramble tournament takes place next Saturday and with the 24-player field now widdled down to 12 two-man teams, the competition is finally coming into focus.

Those with a flair for the dramatic will see their gaze shift to the final group of the tournament. D-Reis and Kiwi return after partnering in the Classic in 2022 and the potential of fireworks on the July 4th weekend as Gene Ferrerra teams up with Todd Horne — an explosive duo with real boom or bust potential. We’re predicting that their first three holes will determine their whole round performance.

Team “Mr. Moms” Todd Horne (left) and Gene Ferrera (right). A rich history with a complicated past — will they be able to set aside their many differences and create a round that etches their names in the history books?

There’s no shortage of interesting pairings — especially Josh and Boston in the 8:10 a.m. group. We anticpate they will be the most popular golf cart on the course come July 8th. But as we see with the mixture of a high and low handicap, the 35/15 rule will certainly level the playing field so everyone has a shot. As FLX Tour pros learned at the Grand Open, the handicaps make a huge difference.

Speaking of handicaps, tour officials announced the cutoff for handicap eligibility going into the tournament will be Monday, July 3. Players have until Monday to juice their handicaps as much as possible on the 18 Birdies app. Once those numbers for each contestant are recorded, Tour officials say they will calculate each team handicaps and send them out to media.

Fans will naturally gravitate towards their favorite teams, and there’s alot to like at this event: Mike and Joey wearing matching sandals, P-Moyns and Tom recreating a Cheech and Chong golf spin-off, Team Alex with Dooley’s signature cooler and Al Gray’s cerebral gameplan, Danny Ott vaccuuming cheese with an old man … There’s a lot to watch out for.

Our eyes of course will be on the team of Danny Driffill and Mike Mortillaro. Danny captured the Classic in 2022 with Joey Mort as his partner and this year the eldest Driffill brothers trades in Joe for his cousin Mike. With both of those two posting respectable finishes at the Grand Open, and advantageous handicaps going into the Classic, they will certainly be in the running when the gallery collides with the green at 18.

Another power pair is Sean Sawyer and Matt Driffill, Sean is currently the No. 1 ranked player on Tour, but still seeking that elusive first major while Matt, with two major championships under his belt, is beginning to round into midseason form.

While excitement is surely in the air, not everyone was quite so happy with their pairings.

“Let’s redraw names” said one disgrunteld co-commissioner, who wished to remain anonymous.
